TO DANIEL GLOSSBRENNER
Daniel Glossbrenner, a cousin of Kurt’s, had been a captain in the famous Rainbow Division of World War I.
Dear Uncle Dan—
I only learned today, from my brother Bernard, that Aunt Edna died. It breaks my heart. You and I can both remember how much her love and generosity meant to me when I was a boy and young man.
I remember, too, that you and she were as close to each other as any couple I ever knew. So your loss is an especially crushing one.
And I remember that your love and generosity to me were the equals of hers. There is no way I can be generous in turn, since I have nothing that could be of use to you at this awful time. It is easy and natural, though, for me to love you a lot. I send that love.
Sincerely—
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
